Govt forms body to bring illegal dockyards under law

A committee has been formed to bring under law the illegal dockyards raised on the banks of Buriganga under the Dhaka river port, reports BSS.

The decision of forming the committee was taken at a meeting with dockyard owners at the conference room of the Ministry of Shipping on Monday.

Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan chaired the meeting, attended by Additional Secretary Mohammad Abdul Mannan and Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Chairman Commodore M Mozammel Haque.

National River Protection Commission Chairman Dr Mojibur Rahman Hawlader was made the president of the committee.

Representatives from the Ministry of Land, Dhaka district administration, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) and dockyard owners' association are other members of the committee.

Besides forming the committee, the meeting took another decision.

It decided that work cannot be carried out by docking a launch or ship beside another one in front of the dockyard for the sake of keeping the shipping movement unhindered.

Dockyard owners' association members Sahidul Islam Bhuiyan, Md Iqbal, Golam Kibria Tipu, Md Sazzad Hossain, Shah Alam Bahadur, Md Nasiruddin and Md Amanullah were also present at the meeting, among others.
