2,000 Bangladeshi workers in Malaysian detention centres

At least 2,000 Bangladeshi undocumented workers are held in Malaysian detention centres.

Most of them were arrested by immigrant police since July last year, the Malaysian government informed, state minister of Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Imran Ahmad during his recent visit to Malaysia at the head of a Bangladesh delegation.

Imran held separate talks with the Malaysian ministers of Human Resources and Home in Kuala Lumpur.

He also separately met former Malaysian deputy Prime Minister Anwar bin Ibrahim and the governor of Sarawak.

After Imran’s return, his team member and additional secretary of EWOE Ministry Ahmed Munirus Saleheen told New Age that on completion of the legal process, detained undocumented Bangladeshi workers would be sent back home.

Officials said that most of the Bangladeshi workers became undocumented in Malaysia for overstaying visas.

Besides, there were others who became undocumented after taking jobs in Malaysia after going there on student visas. 

In July last year, Malaysian immigration authorities crackdown on undocumented foreign workers kicked off.

According to the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training, over 9.21 lakh Bangladeshi workers took jobs in Malaysia since 1978.
Many Bangladeshi victims of trafficking also became undocumented in Malaysia.
