Plan for multiple use of Matarbari seaport

Matarbari deep seaport may be used for multiple purposes to make the investment economically viable, said State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid.

“We have discussed the matter with Prime Minister when PM’s principal secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus raised the issue,” he told the Daily Sun.
The state minister said the stakeholders would share the revenue from the seaport through formation of a development authority.

He explained how the seaport could be used for different purposes.

“Our plan is multiple use of the port. For example, the country depends on import for edible oil. If we fix a pipeline in the deep seaport, the cost of import will shrink,” Nasrul Hamid said.

This is how the port can be used for more than one purposes, he said.

According to him, the investment of the port will not be economically viable if used for a single purpose.

He said the cost of electricity generation will be higher if the port depends on a single source.  At the last meeting of Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday, State Minister for Planning Dr Shamsul Alam said the Prime Minister suggested forming a development authority for Matarbari seaport.
The authority will handle the overall management of the port. Such an authority is required as various development operations are underway centering the coal-fired power plant in the area, Dr. Alam said.

About an additional cost of Tk 158.70 billion in Matarbari 2X600 megawatt ultra super critical coal-fired power plant, Planning Commission member Sharifa Khan said the cost was intended to mainly ensure the facilities at the deep seaport. “Around 98 percent of the additional cost will be utilised for ensuring facilities at the deep seaport,” she said.
