Bangladesh ranked 61st among 68 countries and the European Union in a global ranking on data governance, shows a report published on last month.
George Washington University’s Digital Trade made the ranking on 26 different indicators.
Bangladesh scored less than both India (51st) and Pakistan (59th).
According to the report, Bangladesh is yet to enact laws regarding data, such as a personal data protection law or laws related to the right of data portability.
The report also identified that there is no public-sector data ethics framework in Bangladesh. As a result, public servants of the country do not have any specific guidelines to deal with data ethically and responsibly.
Besides, the Bangladesh government does not introduce any guidelines to direct non-governmental units to share data in different contexts.
The country has also lack of bodies responsible for supporting personal and public sector data sharing among governmental entities.
Countries, including Tunisia, Bolivia, Egypt, Algeria, Botswana, Cuba, Iran and Tanzania, scored less than Bangladesh in the report.
Notably, the personal data protection law in Bangladesh is currently in draft stage. |
