ACC seeks Benazir’s financial transactions info from BFIU
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has sent a letter to the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), seeking financial information of former police chief Benazir Ahmed and his family members.

ACC has asked BFIU to provide this information by the first week of May. ACC Commissioner Zahurul Haque told media on Thursday that the commission has also sent similar requests to different government offices, including the sub-registry offices.

These efforts aim to procure comprehensive information regarding the fixed deposit receipts (FDRs), savings certificates and assets belonging to Benazir, said the ACC official.

Apart from these, the investigation team of the anti-corruption watchdog will also interrogate the former inspector general of police (IGP) to find out the facts related to his alleged indulgence in corruption, Zahurul Haque added.

Earlier, on 22 April, the ACC formed a committee to probe the allegations of irregularities, corruption, abuse of power, and the acquisition of illegal assets by former IGP Benazir.

Later, on 23 April, following hearing on a writ petition, the High Court ordered the authorities concerned to submit a progress report within the next two months.

The recent investigative reports published in different newspapers revealed substantial findings regarding the alleged accumulation of illegal wealth by the former IGP and his family members.

According to these reports, significant wealth has been amassed under the names of Benazir’s wife, Zeeshan Mirza, and his two daughters, Farheen Rishta Binte Benazir and Tahseen Raisa Binte Benazir.

Benazir’s assets include the 600-bigha Savanna Eco Resort located in Sahapur union of Gopalganj Sadar upazila. The former top police official purchased another 800 bighas of land next to it to enlarge the park.

Further investigations have unveiled the existence of at least six companies registered under the names of his wife and daughters across various regions of the country. It is estimated that Benazir’s investments in five of these companies alone may exceed Tk500 crore.
