Container handling at CCT jetty-2 resumes
Container handling at the jetty-2 of the Chittagong Container Terminal (CCT) resumed Wednesday afternoon, as a geared vessel anchored at the berth 45 days after an accident there.

A vessel, MV Xpress Suez, dashed the jetty on June 25, damaging its two gantry cranes -- one of those was displaced and the other was partially damaged -- and forcing suspension of the container handling.

The handling activities remained suspended as the vessel remained anchored there following the accident.

MV Cape Montry berthed at the jetty with 1713 TEUs of container on Wednesday afternoon as the damaged cranes were removed from their positions to a safe area in the jetty.

Unloading of containers started with the help of cranes of the vessel, port officials said. A team of the crane supplier Mitsubishi of Japan visited the port, examined the damaged cranes and submitted a report to the Chittagong Port Authority, including a list of parts needed to be replaced in both the cranes.

The port officials said that only the geared vessels (the vessels having own cranes) are allowed to berth at the jetty as the port faces congestion of containers and ships.  Sources said handling of bulk cargoes, however, resumed at the jetty after 10 days of the accident.
